COASTAL PROTECTION PROJECT IN SAINT-LOUIS

Senegal

Project

The districts of Saint-Louis located on the « Langue de Barbarie » region are subject to natural coastal hazards such as coastal erosion, which leads to the retreat of the shoreline, and marine and river submersion.
The Government of the Republic of Senegal has requested technical and financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD) for the implementation of a coastal protection project called "Protection de Lutte contre l'Erosion Côtière à Saint-Louis (PLCECS)".
The construction of a rock-face protection structure is planned, over a length of 2150 m. This infrastructure, whose objective is to stop the retreat of the shoreline, will start at the end of the protection structure built in 2018 thanks to government funding, and will end to the south of Guet Ndar, at the level of the fish market

The work consists mainly of :

  • the installation of the site, the restoration of the site and the removal of the equipment;
  • demolition work on ruined buildings located behind the future protection structure;
  • supply, transport and storage of materials; - the installation of riprap and geotextile;
  • the construction of an emergency protection of the coastline over a length of 2150m. The protection is composed of a sand core, a filtering layer of riprap (100-200 kg) laid on geotextile and covered with a shell of riprap (1000-2000 kg);
  • backfilling of the land behind the protection provided on the areas where the wall erected in 1930 has been destroyed.
